Games & Events

Exhibitors welcome to play; these are typically not public events.  Rules and eligibility are determined by each game's host.  Sign-up for games by Tuesday, Jul 18th for best odds of being drawn to play.  Signing up does not guarantee a seat; it merely indicates your interest in playing the game.  How it works.

Typically, more people sign-up than there are seats.  The computer will attempt to shuffle players into their preferred games; you are more likely to be seated at your #1 pick than your #2.  Sign up for all games in which you are interested, then ensure your selections are properly sorted (at your games page).  Sign up for as many games as you wish; there is no benefit to limiting your sign-ups.

Everyone onboard by Tuesday, Jul 18th has the same chance of being drawn.  After the drawing, if seats remain available, sign-up for that game will remain open.

You may be drawn for multiple games but you will not be drawn for overlapping games.  You may be drawn as alternate in multiple, overlapping games; showing up as alternate - or not - is your choice.

Boat Race
All ages Walk-Up Friday 10:00am
1hr 30mins
Host: vacant
Build a boat (using only LEGO parts, of course) and race against other boats for speed in the hotel swimming pool.  Use Technic motors (or MINDSTORMS if you dare).  Race for first!  Race for fun!  A Technic set awaits the winner.

All boats must be self-propelled and move without external assistance, use of tether lines, etc., although remote controls are allowed.

This is a slalom race.  See the rules for more details.

Some venues (notably BF/VA) are outdoors and do not let you walk closely to your boat.  Take that into consideration in your design.  In past contests, Power Functions R/C has not worked well due to distance and interference from sunlight, but classic radio R/C does work.  We also permit the use of sBrick as a controller.

Race held rain or shine, though we can't prevent the hotel from closing the pool if they need.

Build In A Hand
Ages 16+ 12 seats
2 alts.
Thursday 12:00pm
1hr
Host: vacant
The entire building process must be completed while holding the constructed model in at least one hand. This grows increasingly difficult as more parts are added that require smaller steps. The model also becomes more fragile as all elements become connected.

All players keep their building set and the winner gets a prize.

CAH Vignette Build
Adult Swim
Ages 21+
30 seats
Thursday 9:30pm
30mins
Host: vacant
This game is held in two sessions.

STEP 1: Players meet at the designated time to draw cards from the CAH deck.  Each player ends up with one black and one white card.  Players then have a couple days to build a vignette representing their two cards.

STEP 2: Players bring their vignettes together for display during Adult Swim.  Players vote for their favorite (game host casts the deciding vote if needed), and the winner gets a prize.

A basic understanding of Cards Against Humanity is strongly suggested.

Cards Against Humanity
Adult Swim
Ages 21+
Walk-Up Saturday 9:00pm
1hr 30mins

A party game for horrible people.  Unlike most of the party games you may have played before, Cards Against Humanity is as despicable and awkward as you and your friends.  For this modified version you will receive bricks for good answers, and you will need to build something rude with your bricks for the win.

If you are easily offended, do not play this game.

Because of the hectic schedule during Adult Swim, this will be hosted as a first-seated pick-up game.

The rules have been altered a bit to make it more fun for all ages. Instead of moving around the board, you get small LEGO bricks for each correct guess, and you get to keep the bricks!

Dirty Brickster $10-$15
All ages Walk-Up Thursday 8:00pm
1hr 30mins
Host: Mark Shoger
No need to sign up; simply show up at the designated time and place with a wrapped gift in hand.  Any number of people can play!

Dirty Brickster is better known (in the USA) as "White Elephant Gift Exchange," "Yankee Swap," or "Dirty Santa."  Players each contribute one gift to the game, and ultimately each player walks away with one different gift of similar value.

  1. All gifts should be valued the same.  Use your imagination to make it fun.  Out-of-production sets or some classic parts from your own collection are far more interesting that something off the store shelf yesterday.  But please make it worth the appropriate amount!
  2. Players bring their gifts wrapped or sealed in a gift bag, careful to conceal the contents.
  3. Players gather in a circle and gifts are placed in the center.
  4. Names are drawn to see who picks first.
  5. The picked player chooses a gift from the pile and opens it, holds it up for all to see, and keeps it (for the time being).
  6. Another name is drawn.
  7. The next player can either choose to take an unopened gift from the pile or to steal a gift from any previous gift-holder.
  8. If someone's gift is stolen, that person can immediately unwrap a new gift or steal another gift.
  9. Any gift stolen 3 times becomes "dead."  It now belongs to that owner and may not be stolen again.

Players are provided with random cups of bricks. When the host says, "Go," players start building!

Players have limited time to build the most creative MOC they can muster. The objective is to be more creative than your competition and you must do it with your limited bricks and limited time.

  • Cups of bricks are provided for you.
  • Cups are the luck of the draw. You may find your bricks difficult to work with, but we'll try to keep all bags equal and fair.
  • You are not required to use every brick in the bag - simply be as creative as you can with what you have.
  • The final MOCs are judged.
  • One winner gets a LEGO set. Every player keeps their cup of bricks!

Two-person teams work together to build a kit. One person sees the parts and builds the set but cannot see the instructions. The other player sees the instructions but cannot see the building progress. Partner players spoon together, sitting upright. The big spoon (rear player) reads instructions and yells to the front where building partner tries to follow verbal instructions and build the kit.

24 players make 12 teams of two.

Selected sign-ups must bring their partner player with them to the game. If both players sign-up and both are selected, one must drop out to allow others to join the game.

Each team keeps their built kit and the fastest (and most accurate) team wins an additional prize.

"One "seed" part is chosen - and kept secret until game-time.

Each player grabs a spot in the Stay & Play area and is given a baggie of the seed parts.  Players have 30 minutes to build MOCs (as many as they wish) featuring the seed element.

Judges determine the winner, who receives a prize, and all participants take home some of the seed part.

Similar to the Parts Draft, but you don't have to purchase a LEGO set in advance.

BrickFair provides the sets - 14 copies of #42088 Cherry Picker and 12 copies of #42060 Roadwork Crew - for this game. Selected players buy-in for $15. 27 players will divide 26 sets. That's a total 6,550 parts, or 243 parts (average) per player, for $15.

Vignette Swap
All ages Walk-Up Friday 5:00pm
30mins
Host: Mark Shoger
Like Dirty Brickster (Secret Santa/White Elephant) but the vignettes are openly viewable.

Build a vignette (that you're willing to surrender) and bring it!  All vignettes are displayed together during the weekend.  At game time, vignettes are swapped, and a few bonus prizes awarded.  Sunday evening, after the public leaves, the vignettes are collected by their new owners to keep!

Players are provided (at the event) a display cube and black "base" plates (using the black plates is optional).  Limit one entry per person per game - enter only your best!

Participating vignettes must:

  1. Be at least 8x8 studs wide, but must not have any parts projecting beyond 12x12 studs (strict!),
  2. Be no wider than 12x12 studs (strict!),
  3. Be no taller than 12 bricks + 1 plate + 1 tile (including the provided black plate base - strict!), and
  4. Include at least 100 pieces.

See examples.  A vignette captures a moment in time and is usually very small.

World Of Lights
All ages Walk-Up Friday 9:00pm
1hr 30mins
Host: Todd Webb
Light up your MOC!  For one hour we'll darken the room and enjoy the show by the street lights of LEGOtown.

Admittedly, the venue doesn't get as dark as we would like. But until I invent the darklight, we're stuck with some emergency lights :(

Yard Sale Thursday
All ages
Buy-in $10
Walk-Up Thursday 5:00pm
3hrs
Host: vacant
This 2-hour event is your chance to sell leftover LEGO without being a vendor. Outside the vendor area, this is the only time registrants may openly advertise items for sale (the MOC area is a strict no-sale-sign zone).

Pre-price your items and collect some quick cash for your unwanted LEGO!

Sign-up on your account page after checking-in at the show.

When signing-up, you are permitted to claim either 1/2-table ($5) or one full table ($10). Limit one full table per seller. Sign-up next to any Table # you prefer (ie: Friend A signs up for Table #12 and Friend B signs up for Table #13 = these friends will be next to each other). But table numbers will not be assigned until the time of the Yard Sale. Setting up is not possible and not permitted until table numbers have been assigned and sellers know where to set up. Table fee will be collected during the sale.

RULE #1: All items on Yard Sale tables must be available for purchase.

Tip #1: Basing prices on Bricklink is good, but if an AFOL can get it on Bricklink later, why should s/he buy it from you now? Give others a reason to shop at your table rather than someone else's.

Tip #2: TLG sells 32x32 plain baseplates for $4.99. You're not likely to sell a used one for $10.

Tip #3: Don't just dump brick on the table and expect it to sell. Baggies are cheap, and there are a lot of other sellers competing for attention.
